The Selecter – Human Algebra
You have to give it to The Selecter – after all these years, they haven’t turned their backs on their roots and still produce great music, and still influenced by the ska and reggae rhythms that drove their debut album ‘Too Much Pressure’ 43 years ago!
The album kicks off with the title track and it’s no disappointing start. Addressing the tragic issue of knife crime, the track examines the pain and anguish felt by the families of victims. The Selecter have certainly not shied away from the hard hitting subjects that has been apparent throughout their career and was always the point of Two-Tone.
The theme continues throughout the album, dissecting the lies and misdirection in the media, police brutality, war…it’s all their laid out on this album. Just what I’d expect from Pauline & Co…
‘Stay Rebel’ is a cracking ska tune (and also the original name of this site before I decided on ‘Rude Rebel’). Remembering and protesting all the black people killed by the police and authorities, it’s an upbeat tune with a dark undertone…great stuff!
Albeit written before all the current turmoil around the world, ‘War War War’ is an excellent reggae protest song, which couldn’t apply more right now if it tried!
Then ‘Parade The Crown’ leaps out at you. A tribute to the late, great ‘Ranking Roger’ it’s fitting that this is an upbeat, happy feeling tune and is an excellent homage to The Beat and General Public vocalist ❤️
Listening to this album left me feeling thoroughly satisfied. The Selecter have still got it and they have it in bucketloads!
