Germany’s Spicy Roots tie up a classic!
It’s 5 years since the last album dropped from German Ska maestros ‘Spicy Roots’ and over 20 years since their first.
With this latest album, entitled ‘Tie Me Up’, they prove that the years have not effected their ability to roll out some top quality Ska music – 13 tracks of offbeat perfection is what is on offer here!
‘Not a weak track’ is something I’ve said before but this album takes it to a new level – it really is one of the strongest ska albums I’ve heard recently!
If you loved the European Ska of the 90’s as I did, then this is the album for you. Upbeat, dancefloor ska that will have you skanking all night!
Add to that collaborations with Mexico’s ‘Los Chickléts’, ‘Dr. Ring Ding’ and the release being available on red or black vinyl (I plumped for the red version) and you have got a recipe for a perfect Ska music souffle!
Kicking off with ‘Engine Parade’, I have to say listening to the entire album that this is my least favourite track, which is a ridiculous statement really because it’s a great track and when I first started playing the album I thought “Wow, great start!”, but this album starts off good, and then just gets better and better.
‘From Ska to London’ flows with a sweet Ska rhythm beautifully, and is followed by ‘All Over Again’, which really hits you with the 90’s Ska music vibe. And wow, it’s just gets better from here on in!
‘Tie Me Up’ gives off amazing summer vibes with strong keyboard sounds, and it’s one I’ll be playing loudly in the garden this year if the U.K. actually gets a summer. ‘More’ hits you with simple danceable piano and horn driven ska music that will you up on your feet .
If that’s not enough, you’re then served up with the albums first of three collaboration and the first of two with Mexico’s ‘Los Chicklets. ‘Ska Mexicano’ is a song that only the dead will be able to resist dancing to, and i suspect it could even raise a few of them!
‘One Chord’s Enough’ flows along beautifully and then you’re hit with my two absolute favourite tracks on the album and possibly my favourite Ska music tracks so far this year, ‘Too Many Questions’ (with Dr. Ring Ding) and ‘Come Back’. The former reminds me of something that belongs on The Toasters ‘Dub 56’ album (which I LOVED) and the latter makes it impossible to keep still, you just HAVE to dance!
Finishing off the album, you have the upbeat ‘Jump and Run’, a second collaboration with ‘Los Chickléts’ entitled ‘Ska es Bailar’ – (Ska is dancing) and the excellent ‘Rastaman’.
This is an album that definitely should grace your collection, go and buy it now! Or stream it….whatever!
