Death of Guitar Pop – Stay Lucky

It only seems two minutes since DOGP burst onto the Ska scene with their debut single ‘Rickety Old Train’. Accompanied by the low budget, high humour video their brand of unique ska-pop was certainly something different on the scene and was a breathe of fresh air.
Suddenly, here we are, four albums down the road! Where has the time gone?!

Death of Guitar Pop

We all know one, the guy in the pub who has the wildest of stories. He’s been a hitman, a professional footballer, knows famous people, is a fully qualified solicitor etc. ‘First in, Last Out’, the first track on the album tells that story!

Next up is ‘Bosh!’, an upbeat Essex boy pop-ska anthem aided by celebrity Essex boy Tom Skinner (The Apprentice, Celebrity Masterchef, 8 out 10 Cats etc). The upbeat pop feel is kept going with the next tracks ‘Tripwire’ & ‘The British Bulldog’.

‘Ska all Through the Night’ is a proper full on skanking masterpiece and I think my favourite track on the album

‘The tempo slows a bit with ‘Leaving for London’ and ‘Down at my Local Cafe’ is a Chas n Dave-esque rockney style piano singalong which I fuckin love to be honest!

DOGP Be Lucky

The album continues in the same vein, great pop vibes, with ska over (and under) tones with ‘The Parent Police’ being another one of my favourites and clearly a biographical story of a turbulent childhood.

I think it’s fair to say this is definitely a more indie-pop, less Ska album from the boys. If you listen to their first album, ’69 Candy Street’ and this one side by side, you can see how they have introduced other influences into their sound. Nevertheless, there’s a generous helping of ska beats and it certainly deserves to be here. A great fourth offering from Death of Guitar Pop, looking forward to what they have in store for 2024!
