Skanking in Style: ‘9 on the Tiles’ Keeps the Two-Tone Flame Burning Bright

PorkPie - 9 on the Tiles

Ska has always been a genre that thrives on energy, authenticity, and the ability to fuse serious themes with infectious rhythms. Pork Pie’s latest release delivers all that and more. This is a band clearly steeped in the rich traditions of Two-Tone, but unafraid to branch into reggae, pop, and even soulful introspection. What results is a remarkably strong album that will surely be recognised as one of the standout ska releases of the year.

The album bursts into life with ‘Roughside’, a high-octane opener that sets the tone with its danceable beat and boundless energy. It’s a roaring start that wastes no time getting the listener on his or her feet.

From there, ‘Lessons’ takes a more reflective turn. Slowing the tempo down, it rides a classic ska beat while delivering a poignant message about dead-beat dads and there’s definitely a touch of Madness in its sound.

That nutty boy influence continues in ‘Past Futures’, where the pace quickens again. Driven by melodic piano lines and a fast rhythm, it echoes the best of classic ska-pop hybrids—again conjuring the spirit of Madness those kings of Camden.

Next comes ‘Devil in Her Eyes’, which leans heavily into reggae territory. Smooth and sultry, the track carries a relaxed UB40-style vibe, showcasing Pork Pie’s range and their ability to groove without losing momentum.

‘The Winner’ brings the energy back up with a return to fast-paced ska rhythms. The lead guitar takes centre stage, delivering a punchy accompaniment to lyrics that seem to chart the excesses of a chaotic life of excess.

Big brass and bouncing rhythms define ‘Mr Big Mouth’, a track that revels in its swagger. It’s a feel-good standout, with horns leading the charge and a groove that refuses to quit.

With ‘Rudeboy Renegade’, the band dives into deep reggae instrumental territory. A winding brass section and heavy basslines form the backbone, and there’s more than a trace of The Specials’ Vote for Me in its DNA—both musically and atmospherically.

Then comes ‘Truth or Dare’, a high-energy blast of ska that pulses with nostalgic longing. It’s a danceable anthem full of youthful spirit and a yearning for the recklessness of days gone by.

Finally, ‘Bones’ closes the album with a slower, bass-heavy groove. It’s a more subdued end, but a powerful one—bringing things full circle with a reflective, almost contemplative vibe that underscores the band’s depth.

All told, this is a powerhouse of a ska album. Pork Pie have delivered something that’s not only musically diverse and consistently engaging, but also firmly rooted in the heart of what makes ska so beloved. For fans of Two-Tone and beyond, this is essential listening.

The album is available to listen to now on all the usual streaming sites and pre-orders for a vinyl & CD releases are being taken now on their Bandcamp page here:
